MODELING OF THE CEREBRAL VASCULATURE
Brian Sweetman, Sukhraaj S. Basati and Andreas Linninger

Cerebral blood flow has profound effects on overall physiological function and brain mechanics. Pulsating vasculature causes brain tissue strain and cyclical CSF flow. The association of abnormal hemodynamics in circulatory disorders such as stroke and epidural hematoma will be studied using first principles mathematical models. A thorough analysis of intracranial dynamics will be complete when taking into account the significant physiological effects of cerebral vasculature on brain physics.

DRUG DELIVERY TO THE HUMAN BRAIN
Oleksandr Ivanchenko, Nikhil Sindhwani and Andreas Linninger

Our research focuses on understanding the transport phenomena in Convection Enhanced Delivery (CED) of therapeutic drugs to the brain for the treatment of neurological diseases ranging from brain tumors, epilepsy to Parkinson’s disease. Drug distribution is observed experimentally in brain phantoms cast from Agarose gels. The drug distribution is quantified by using advanced image analysis techniques or MRI. Optical methods are also applied to investigate deformation in soft tissue to understand the problem of reflux.

DESIGN AND SYNTHESIS OF SEPARATION SYSTEM
Seon Kim, Gerardo Ruiz and Andreas Linninger

Our research objectives are focused on the PRODUCTS-ONLY process which embodies maximized profit from the entire products portfolio instead of the limited attention to a single product. PRODUCTS-ONLY process embraces economically maximizing profit and environmentally minimizing energy consumption and waste production. Novel more adaptable manufacturing requires fast and reliable design methodologies capable of determining feasibility or impossibility of desired separation targets. Ideally, fully automatic computer programs should perform optimal mapping of all process streams into the changing product portfolio.

GENETIC ALGORITHM FOR COLUMN SEQUENCING
Gerardo Ruiz and Andreas Linninger

Basing on the initial individual chromosomes invented randomly within different definitions, children chromosomes are cultivated by arithmetic crossover and nonuniform dynamic mutation. Genetic Algorithms is applied to find the optimal column sequencing  for recovering solvent from pharmaceutical wastes stream.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND CONTROL UNDER UNCERTAINTY
Jeonghwa Moon, Sukhraaj S. Basati and Andreas A. Linninger

High performance processes require design that goes close to design boundaries and specifications while still guaranty robust performances.

In order to go tighter to the boundaries of process performances much attention was been devoted to integrated design and control in which decision about the dynamics as well the design are taken by optimal fashion.

MULTIPHASE FLOWS USING CFD
Oleksandr Ivanchenko, Gerardo J. Ruiz Mercado, Brian Sweetman, Sukhraaj S. Basati and Andreas Linninger

In computational fluid dynamics, we are interested in solving heat and mass transfer problems in chemical engineering processes. A new research area is the development of reliable computational algorithms for fluid-structure interaction such as they occur in gas bubbles or elastic membranes. We are also studying multiphase phenomena such as precipitation, condensation, etc. These are important for control of VOC emissions in the pharmaceutical industry.
