Research Interests

Research projects are in the areas of complex system design and analysis. Our research advances mathematical modeling and computational methods in process design and optimization, integrated design and control and systems biology. Current research projects include

1. Integrated design and control of uncertain systems

This work aims at creating chemical processes for flexible dynamic performance by optimally balancing design and   control decisions.

2. Problem inversion of distributed systems

We quantify unknown reaction and transport phenomena on classical or biological systems from limited observations  in two or three dimensions using mathematical programming methods.

3. Synthesis of separation networks

We are inventing evolutionary computer based synthesis procedures to systematically build and optimize complex column configurations.

Our research group is also engaged in interdisciplinary research on the human brain with the University of Chicago hospitals. Research projects address:

4. Invasive drug delivery into the human brain

This research studies the bio-transport mechanism of therapeutic drugs for the treatment of brain disorders using invasive drug infusion policies.

5. Intracranial dynamics in the human brain

Our goal is to quantify blood flow and soft-tissue fluid structure interactions in the human brain using only first principles such as Newton's law and Consolidation theory.
